Reba, Dierks, Lady A Get Ready to 'Rock Band'

The Rock Band Music Store continues to roll out tracks from hot country artists for gamers to sing and play along with on their favorite game system. Beginning next week, songs from Reba McEntire, Dierks Bentley, Lady Antebellum, Jamey Johnson and more will be added as downloadable content for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii. The nine songs being released will be available as the 'Going Country Pack 04' and will also be available as individual tracks. Previous country collections have included tracks by Shania Twain, Brad Paisley and Willie Nelson.

One superstar who might be gearing up for the challenge is vocal powerhouse Martina McBride, if only to have a chance to redeem herself following her first attempt!

"I was not very good," Martina confessed to The Boot of her maiden Rock Band voyage last year. "There was this drum set and there were drumsticks there in the studio, so what do you do? I decided to try it. I turned it on and tried to figure it out."

Maybe Martina will put down the drumsticks and pick up the mic to tackle one of her pal Reba's signature hits, 'Fancy,' which is among the tunes now available. Also being unveiled are Dierks' 'What Was I Thinkin',' Lady A's 'Lookin' for a Good Time' and Jamey's 'Women.' They'll be joined by Keith Urban's 'Days Go By,' Josh Turner's 'Would You Go With Me,' Eric Church's 'Hell on the Heart,' Laura Bell Bundy's 'Rebound' and 'It Happens' by Sugarland. The tracks are all of the original master recordings. Selected tracks will also be available in the family-friendly LEGO Rock Band Music Store.

A total of 1,594 songs are currently available through the Rock Band platform. Prices begin at $1.99 per song via disc and download purchase, or $14.99 for the 'Going Country Pack 04.' More than 70 million paid downloads have been registered since Rock Band's Music Store was launched in 2007. For a complete list of tracks, visit the official Rock Band website.

Reba McEntire Back To Music At Mohegan Sun Arena

Reba McEntire has impressively transcended her singing roots on multiple occasions with successful star turns on Broadway and television, but she always comes back to music as her most essential appeal. The 55-year-old Oklahoma native hauled out past hits and present work alike in her performance Friday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, delivering a first-rate evening of mainstream country wrapped in a sunny disposition.

McEntire's music came with a substantial helping of gloss, much of it courtesy of a 9-piece backing band that assembled an outsized throb for her to work in front of on the opening "Can't Even get the Blues." McEntire's singing was structured with a formal cadence but always delivered with warmth, percolating among the twin fiddles in the springy "The Fear of Being Alone."

McEntire has amassed a sizable list of hits since her mid-1980s breakthrough, but left much of that catalog out of her program as she opted to spend substantial time focusing on her most current album, of which she played more than half the songs. The Western swing of "I'll Have What She's Having" was a natural fit for the singer's bright tone, which prodded at its juicy bob as a pedal steel guitar whined a complementary tone. She wrangled every line of "Fallin' out of Love" as if she had a lariat around it, her presentation structured without turning stiff.

The general perkiness of McEntire's delivery brought character to tunes like "Pink Guitar," in which her friendly lilt provided most of what the song had to offer. Her storytelling within songs was direct yet effective, forging a bittersweet reminiscence amid the trickling piano of "The Greatest man I Never Knew." Her cover of Kelly Clarkson's "Because of You" was a touch more inflated than serves the natural grounded quality of her delivery, and a new number from an album due later this year, "Turn on the Radio" gave her a robust but generic canvas on which to work.

McEntire's seven year stint in the television series that bore her name was relived for a brief while as her series co-star Melissa Peterman appeared in what essentially became a detour from concert into live sitcom. Playing the ditsy bond drunk, Peterman annoyed McEntire in scripted fashion, generating only the mildest of yuks before sticking around to playfully interrupt a rendition of the show's theme song, "I'm a Survivor."

After working out her vocal range while keeping its phrasing focused in ascending "Is there Life out There" to close her set, McEntire returned for a single song encore, sporting a sparkling red dress and snapping at the lyrics of "Fancy." It made for a composed piece of theater, the sort of simply staged craftsmanship at which she excels.

Reba McEntire's Friday set list: "Can't Even get the Blues," "The Fear of Being Alone," "Strange," "The Night the Lights Went out in Georgia," "I'll Have What She's Having," "Fallin' out of Love," "Pink Guitar," "I Keep on Lovin' You," "Nothing to Lose," "Somebody Should Leave/For my Broken Heart," "Does he Love You," "I Want a Cowboy," "The Greatest man I Never Knew," "Consider me Gone," "Why Haven't I Heard From You," "Because of You," "Turn on the Radio," "I'm a Survivor," "Is There Life out There," (Encore) "Fancy."

Reba Turns On The Drive

Reba McEntire photo by Russ Harrington, courtesy of the Valory Music Co.

It was a good 30 years ago that Reba McEntire picked up her first Top 10 hit, “(You Lift Me) Up To Heaven.” Since that time, she’s watched scores of country stars come and go, but kept her own spot among the elite performers in the genre.

At the time she had that first hit, the biggest star in country music was Kenny Rogers, and even now, Reba remembers how much the Gambler was driven to stay at the top.

“Kenny,” she told Foster’s Daily Democrat in New Hampshire, “always told me, ‘I don’t have to be No. 1, but I sure like running with the Top 10.’”

Reba’s still doing that. She spent four weeks at No. 1 in the last year with “Consider Me Gone,” and the album it came from, Keep On Loving You, was certified gold. Another sign of her continued impact comes with Facebook, where Reba’s now one of only 10 country artists who’ve amassed at least 1 million fans.

Part of her success is simple persistence. She is, she said, “keeping at it, never giving up, never slacking off, always trying to find something new, better, bigger.”

“New” these days means a new album. Her new single, “Turn On The Radio,” will be included on All The Women I Am, which comes out Nov. 9. Instead of coasting, you can count on Reba to work hard at making it a success.

“To maintain is one thing,” she said, “but to kick it in the butt again and go forward is another.”

Reba McEntire opens new chapter of her career at Meadowbrook

As she opens what she considers a new chapter in her career, Reba McEntire assures that she does not take for granted the good things that have come her way.

"I had lots of little bitty breaks. That is the big break that has kept me going," she explains.

She has earned the mantle of "legend," and the right to be billed on the marquee, if she chooses, as simply "Reba."

That's the only name fans need to know to immediately know who it is. After all, she has sold more than 55 million albums, had 33 number one hits, earned the music industry highest honor, a Grammy, twice; received seven Country Music Association Awards, 12 Academy of Country Music Awards, nine People's Choice honors and 15 American Music Awards.

Along the way, this down-to-earth proud Oklahoma native has achieved success in television (her self-titled prime time TV series was a top-rated sitcom for six seasons); on film; and on Broadway, earning rave reviews for her performance in "Annie Get Your Gun," a role that was a natural for this daughter of a three-time world champion roper and member of Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City.

McEntire also has had a best-selling autobiography, as well as the popular Reba collection at Dillard's featuring women's clothing and footwear and bed and bath specialty items.

The artist headlines a concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at Meadowbrook U.S. Cellular Pavilion, Gilford, N.H. Artist Steve Azar guests on the bill. Jandee Lee Porter performs on the second stage at 6 p.m. (McEntire also performs Friday, Aug. 20, at Mohegan Sun Arena, Uncasville, Conn.)

McEntire sees her strength as her endurance — "keeping at it, never giving up, never slacking off, always trying to find something new, better, bigger." Keeping it all fresh, she says, is a matter of "finding those new things, making new challenges for yourself."

One of those challenges, she suggests, is in keeping her career at a high level. The multitalented artist said that it is more difficult to maintain success than it is to achieve it. "To maintain is one thing, but to kick it in the butt again and go forward is another," she explained.

The carrot in front of her, she implies, is always trying to improve — to select a better song, deliver a more powerful performance and offer a more entertaining show.

She quotes Kenny Rogers in explaining. "Kenny always told me," she recalled, 'I don't have to be number one, but I sure like running with the Top 10.' " So, for McEntire, it is a matter of "always looking ahead, seeing what more we can do."

She believes she is entering a new chapter of her entertainment career, she said, because, "I'm back to only my music." In the past 10 years, she has had TV and stage also competing for her attention and time.

Now it's time to really concentrate and focus on her music, she said.

In that spirit, she offers, "Keep on Loving You," her first studio album in six years, a follow-up to her "Reba Duets," which was number one on both pop and country album charts. Her last 13 studio albums have each received platinum status for reaching one million copies in sales.

She selected "Keep on Loving You" as the title for her new CD as a tribute to her fans. "You've always been there for me, and I'm going to keep on loving you," she told them.

McEntire expresses excitement that at her age, 54, radio is still playing her music and that fans still want to listen to it and see her perform. She is, she said, "very grateful, appreciative and blessed."

Some have suggested that the new record is one of the best she has ever made.

One writer got to its heart, noting: "Reba's music poignantly captures the routine details and crushing disappointment of American women's lives, where a red-carpet moment is the result of a Kool-Aid spill, not a star-studded movie premiere. It's the sound of babies crying and dryers humming, the silence of unappreciated sacrifices and ignored dreams."

It's about real life. McEntire said. She insists that she is the same person she was growing up in Southeastern Oklahoma.

What she has to offer, she said, is "being honest and being me."

"Being honest to my audiences is very important," she added. "I'm the same offstage as on. When people come backstage and meet me, I'm in my tennis shoes and jeans and they say, "She's just like us.' I say, "When did you think I wasn't?' If they say, 'Well, you had a fancy dress on stage,' I tell them, "Well, don't you wear a fancy dress sometimes?' "

According to McEntire, success also is just a way of improving, but not necessarily changing, yourself. "My livelihood has improved. I once lived in a little house when I first got married where we had to haul every drop of water we used," she recalled. "Now I'm living with all the modern conveniences and everything, but success has not changed me as a person. I'm still the same Reba I've always been, but more determined to improve.

God gave me a gift to sing. I don't feel I should tamper with that."

She also views success as giving her the opportunity "to do things to help others." "That's what success means. You've got the clout to help other people," she explained.

She learned a belief in herself from her parents. Her mother was a teacher, and her dad a rodeo champion.

"They taught us you can't get anything for nothing," she said. "You've got to work hard and prove yourself and you have to stick with it once you've started with it, make it creative, know what you want to do and work at improving it."

Though she takes the responsibility of being in the spotlight quite seriously, McEntire said that she never considered herself a role model until she began receiving mail from young people "saying they want to be just like me."

"That's a tough statement to live up to," she admitted. "I really have to set a good example, to watch my p's and q's. I usually tell them, 'Don't look up to me. There's a big guy upstairs to look to for guidance.'

"A mother once came up to me, stuck her finger in my face, shook it and said, 'My daughter idolizes you. You watch every move you make.' I said, 'Yes Mam!' I understand everything she felt. The responsibility (of being a role model) is not easy. There's a lot of pressure, but maybe that's why I was put on this earth: to be a role model. I take that responsibility very seriously, and I do watch what I do all the time. I wouldn't like to do without it (the responsibility)."

She said she wants to perform in front of more people, "get the songwriters' music in front of more people, touch more people." "That's why I strive so hard to find good songs that touch people's lives instead of songs that just make noise for three minutes," she explained.

McEntire reminds that music can be a healing and powerful force. "Music is an expression of emotion. When you hear a song you are touched by, you really have no idea if people will go and love it like you do. It's really great when the outcome is that positive," she said

The Recording Industry Association of America named this positive person last century's most successful country female artist.

"You can't do what you want to do in life by sitting at home and telling your neighbor what you want to do," McEntire said of her approach. "You have to get out there and prove to the world you can do it."

…And so she has.

Steve Azar Honored to Be Sharing the Stage With Reba

Later this month, Steve Azar will be traveling with a queen ... the Queen of Country, that is, as he has been tapped to open for Reba McEntire on a string of tour dates on the east coast. "I'm looking forward to it," Steve tells The Boot. "I just love Reba, and I'm honored that she asked me to be a part of those dates."

Steve has also acted as a songwriter for Reba. He has credits on a 2008 album she released through Hallmark, 'Love Revival.' "The song she recorded of mine was called 'Big Blue Sky,'" Steve reports. "It was cool!

"I've got to tell you, Reba gets to me," Steve continues. "She's real. Her music has always been honest. I love how long her career has lasted and how long left she's got. She's up there with Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger ... Her music is so authentic. To get to do some shows with her and to know she thought of me enough to have me out and record one of my songs is just so cool."

Steve's currently burning up the country singles chart with his latest single, 'Sunshine,' off his 'Slide on Over Here' album.

UMG Pulls Music Videos From MTV Over Vevo Dispute

By Antony Bruno

Fans of Universal Music Group artists visiting MTV.com are finding that the site suddenly no longer has music videos available from most of the label’s artists.

According to sources on both sides of the issue, the missing videos are a result of a breakdown in licensing talks. UMG had been licensing music directly to MTV for years, but is now directing all licensing negotiations to the Vevo joint venture, which also includes Sony Music Entertainment as a stakeholder, while EMI licenses music to the player.

According to sources close to the situation, MTV’s existing licensing deal with UMG had expired and Vevo was leading the renegotiation process. But an as-yet defined “hang-up” scuttled the talks and UMG responded by pulling its content. That’s affected not only MTV.com, but also the websites for VH1 and CMT. The impasse does not affect music videos playing on MTV’s cable network channels, just online properties. Also, there seem to be a handful of UMG videos still up, such as for those artists nominated for MTV Music Video Awards.

MTV issued the following statement when contacted by Billboard:

“For almost 30 years, we have enjoyed long and colorful partnerships with all the music labels, including UMG and their talented roster of artists on MTV, VH1 and CMT. As the industry evolves, we continue to seek out new and innovative ways to connect artists with their fans that are mutually beneficial to everyone. However, during our recent discussions with Vevo, we were unable to reach a fair and equitable agreement for rights to stream UMG artists’ music video content. As a result, UMG has elected to pull their music videos from our web sites. We are disappointed by this move and sincerely hope that UMG will work with us toward a fair resolution and allow their artists to once again connect with the millions of music fans who visit MTV.com, VH1.com and CMT.com every month.”

A UMG statement on the matter reads:

“MTVN has been unwilling to negotiate a fair syndication deal with Vevo to carry our artists’ videos and consequently our videos will not be shown on their online properties. We believe that using Vevo as our online music video syndication platform is the best way to maximize revenue for our artists, our songwriters and ourselves, while bringing our videos to the widest possible audience. In less than 8 months since its launch, Vevo has already become the web’s #1 rated video network with over 49 million unique visitors monthly, dramatically eclipsing those on MTV’s online properties, while attracting scores of major advertisers and tens of millions in advertising dollars. As a result, our artists are enjoying tremendous exposure on Vevo on YouTube and Vevo.com, and will enjoy even more as Vevo continues to complete syndication deals supplementing the existing arrangements with leading destinations as AOL and CBS Interactive.”

Vevo CEO Rio Caraeff said talks remain ongoing. “Vevo has been in negotiations with Viacom, including BET and MTV, as a syndication partner,” he says. “We are still in negotiations with them. We hope to one day power videos we have under license for MTV properties just like you can with CBS or AOL or YouTube.”

How this affects Sony, as a Vevo stakeholder, remains unclear. If Vevo and MTV can’t come to an agreement, it seems only a matter of time before Sony follows suit and pulls its content as well, although there’s no indication yet that will be the case. The state of Sony’s current licensing deals with MTV is not known, and Sony has not yet replied to requests for comment. Billboard will update the story once more details are available.

The timing of the dispute is interesting: It comes barely a month after MTV finalized a deal to sell ads around music videos owned by Warner Music Group. That deal gives MTV exclusive rights to all of WMG’s ad inventory, including that on YouTube, WMG websites, and MTV. That deal also means that all WMG video spins will be counted as MTV traffic, regardless of where the views take place.

WMG, obviously, is the only major label not participating in the Vevo venture, and sources say there’s no sign that the label will capitulate anytime soon.

It could be some time for the issue is resolved and when UMG led the formation of Vevo, it was a direct shot against longtime partner MTV.

Here’s an excerpt from an interview with MTV Networks president Van Toffler at Billboard’s Music & Money conference, held last March in New York.

What advice do you have for Vevo?
We want them to be successful. As I said, we need stars, we need the industry to work. We’re symbiotic with the industry, across all of our different channels, so we’d love for them to work. The only advice I would give is, history has kind of told us what has worked on the Internet is primarily a compelling consumer proposition. As opposed to a business proposition morphing into a compelling consumer one. I think if they continue to integrate and get the product great, and get the content great, it’s got a real shot.

There’s going to be an obvious impact on how MTV plays music videos online now, because if you want to license videos, you’re going to have to do so via the Vevo aggregation hub. Is that something you plan to do?
We’ve had no problem getting videos. We expose more videos to people than Yahoo, AOL, and Vevo. And our traffic's growing, so I don’t really anticipate we’re goingt to have a problem getting the videos. We’re also going to create great content around the artist and the narrative around the artist and also we haven’t really unlocked the great visual history we have in music across our channels around the globe, which we’re slowly going to do.
